The Basics

What Is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a form of digital money that exists on the internet. Unlike Canadian dollars or euros, no government or bank controls it. Instead, thousands of computers around the world keep a shared record of every transaction โ€” this shared record is called the blockchain.

A few important facts to know:

  • There will only ever be 21 million Bitcoin โ€” it cannot be printed like paper money.
  • You can send Bitcoin to anyone in the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without a bank.
  • Bitcoin is highly volatile โ€” its price rises and falls dramatically, sometimes by 50% or more in months.
  • It is legal in Canada but not insured by CDIC like a bank account.
  • You are responsible for your own security โ€” there is no bank to call if something goes wrong.
โš  Bitcoin Is Risky โ€” Please Read This Carefully

Bitcoin's price can drop 50% or more in a matter of months. It has also recovered strongly after major drops historically โ€” but there are absolutely no guarantees of any return. It is possible to lose everything you put in. Never invest money you cannot afford to lose completely, including money set aside for rent, food, medical care, or other necessities.

For Beginners

How to Get Started Safely

If you decide โ€” after your own research and consultation with a financial professional โ€” that you want to explore Bitcoin, here is a careful step-by-step approach that many beginners follow.

1
Educate yourself first

Read the free PDF and explore the topic pages on this site before spending a single dollar. Watch the video above. Talk to someone you trust. Understanding what you are getting into is the most important step.

2
Speak to a tax professional

In Canada, buying and selling Bitcoin has tax implications under the Income Tax Act. The CRA treats Bitcoin as a commodity, not currency. Capital gains may apply when you sell. Speak to an accountant before you start, and keep a written record of every transaction including dates and amounts paid.

3
Start very small

Many services let you buy as little as $10 worth. If you decide to start, use only a small amount โ€” money you could lose completely without it affecting your life. Never use funds set aside for rent, groceries, medication, or your emergency fund.

4
Consider Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA)

Instead of buying all at once, many people buy a small, fixed amount on a regular schedule โ€” for example, $25 every two weeks. This approach reduces the risk of putting all your money in at the highest price. See the DCA page on this site for more detail.

5
Use a reputable Canadian exchange

Look for a regulated, Canadian-based service. See the "Where to Buy" section below. Avoid unknown apps, websites, or services promoted through social media, cold calls, or text messages โ€” these are very common scam vectors targeting seniors.

6
Learn about wallets and seed words

If you ever hold a significant amount, you should store it safely off an exchange in your own wallet. Your "seed phrase" โ€” a list of 12 or 24 words โ€” is the master key to your Bitcoin. Write it on paper and store it in a safe place. Never photograph it or store it digitally.

7
Never share your seed words โ€” with anyone

Not a family member, not a support agent, not a website, not someone who calls claiming to be from a government agency or the exchange. Anyone who asks for your seed words is attempting to steal your Bitcoin. No legitimate service will ever ask for them.

8
Watch for scams targeting seniors

Common scams include: unsolicited investment advice by phone or email, "Bitcoin recovery" services claiming to retrieve lost funds, romance scams involving Bitcoin, fake government notices demanding payment in Bitcoin, and fake exchange websites. If something feels wrong, it almost certainly is. Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

๐Ÿšจ Senior Scam Warning

Seniors are disproportionately targeted by Bitcoin-related fraud. Bitcoin payments are irreversible โ€” once sent, they cannot be recovered. No legitimate government agency, Microsoft support representative, CRA officer, or investment advisor will ever demand payment in Bitcoin. Hang up and call a trusted family member or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
